The Eureka City Council convened in regular session at the City Building on October 19, 2009, at 7:30 p.m. Mayor Scott Punke called the meeting to order and led The Pledge of Allegiance and then directed the City Clerk to call the roll. Present were Aldermen Zeltwanger, Hinnen, Hinthorne, Prather, Sancken, Waters, Meares, and Kupfer. Also in attendance were Lynn Hinnen, Treasurer; Marilyn Walter, City Clerk; Anne Sandvik, City Administrator; Jim Lehman, Public Works Director; and Chief Al Misener.
Moved by Hinnen, second by Meares, to approve the minutes of the October 5, 2009, regular meeting of the City Council. Passed on roll call vote Hinnen, Meares, Zeltwanger, Hinthorne, Prather, Sancken, Waters, and Kupfer all voting Aye.
The Mayor asked for public comments on any action to be taken on Agenda items. There were none.
Moved by Waters, second by Meares, to approve and pay the bills as the City’s obligation in the amount of $33,029.26. Passed on roll call vote with Waters, Meares, Zeltwanger, Hinnen, Hinthorne, Prather, Sancken, and Kupfer all voting Aye.
Moved by Hinthorne, second by Sancken, to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented for the month ending September 30, 2009. Passed on roll call vote with Hinthorne, Sancken, Zeltwanger, Hinnen, Prather, Waters, Meares, and Kupfer all voting Aye.
Moved by Meares, second by Hinthorne, to approve the recommendation of the Maintenance Committee to renew the contract with our current electric provider, Integrys Energy Services, beginning May 2010 and ending November 2011 at a rate of .05463 per KWH. Passed on roll call vote with Meares, Hinthorne, Zeltwanger, Hinnen, Prather, Sancken, Waters, and Kupfer all voting Aye.
Committee Reports:
Chairman Waters of the Budget Committee: This committee met tonight. Start thinking about having your committee budget meeting in the next couple of months.
Chairman Meares of the Administration and Personnel Committee: The next meeting is Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m.
Chairman Hinnen of the Enterprise Committee: The next meeting is Tuesday, October 27, at 7 p.m.
Chairman Waters of the Maintenance Committee: The Blue Ribbon committee has had two meetings to discuss applications of persons to replace Jim Lehman. There were 18 candidates and that has been narrowed down to six. Interviews will be on Saturday, October 31.
Chairman Zeltwanger of the Public Safety Committee: The Blue Ribbon committee has had one meeting to go through the 43 applications for Chief of Police. The next meeting will be Monday.
Chairman Hinnen of the Park and Recreation Committee: No report
Chairman Sancken of the Economic Development Committee: He needs to schedule a meeting. (This was set for 6:30 p.m. on November 2.)
Chairman Mayor Punke of the Liquor Commission: There has been a violation by Casey’s in a State Police liquor check. The Mayor will be setting a hearing soon.
Chair Hinthorne of the Communications Committee: Please remember to get the sidewalk repair surveys in by November 1.
New Business: Mayor Punke read a letter from the Illinois Association of Water Pollution Control Operators indicating that the City of Eureka wastewater facility has been nominated for an award for “Best Operated Wastewater Treatment Works.” Our facility was one of only seven nominated from the 257 Group 2 fcilities considered statewide. The winner will be chosen and the award given at their April 2010 annual conference.
The Mayor congratulated Doug, Jim, and those who work in that area. Jim Lehman stated that the Council also is to be commended for approving the projects that needed work.
Public Comments: Jerry Riley was wearing a Happy Birthday hat in honor of Anne’s birthday tomorrow.
There being no further business to come before the Council the meeting adjourned at 7:43 p.m.
