Minutes - October 19, 2006

The October Meeting was held at Maple Lawn Homes with 12 in attendance including our featured speaker, Mark Honeg from Cox Transfer. The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted for filing as corrected. Treasury balance as of September 30, 2006 is $8,393.35.

Committee Reports:

Christmas with Santa – The Board recommended that Vada Schertz chair this event again. The event was a success last year. She has graciously agreed to do so. It will be held December 9 at Lakeview Shopping Center. The hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Economic Development Council - No Report.

City - Jim Meares was present for the city. The turn lanes West of town have been started. There will be a new building erected at the lake to be used for storage. A meeting will held on October 30 to discuss the feasibility of the formation of a park district. A video for the website will be shot tomorrow. Bittner Locker has plans to expand. The house at 604 S. Main St. will soon be used as a “Bed and Breakfast”. Jim was pleased to announce that Nancy Scott, director of Eureka Public Library District, has been awarded the 2006 Studs Terkel Humanity Service Award. She was nominated by the City. There will be a presentation and reception scheduled once the medal is received. It is worthy to note that the medal s made by the same company that makes the Pulitzer Prize.

Old Business

Business Spotlight – Mark Honeg, President of Cox Transfer was our featured speaker this month. He gave an interesting presentation about the history and current status of the company. They currently employ 28 in the office in Eureka and have 80-90 drivers and 8 owners – operators. They haul a variety of products from packing peanuts to Caterpillar parts to food. They also support local events by hauling basketball hoops for the Gus Macker tournament and rubber ducks for the Center for Prevention of Abuse duck race.

Our November featured speaker will be Duane Schroeder, State Farm Agent.

New Business – The City of Eureka is soliciting businesses and organizations to purchase trees to improve the downtown area. A motion was made and seconded to purchase one tree at a cost of $400.00 for this project. Motion carried by unanimous voice vote.

Brief Business Update – Eldon Liabraaten circulated samples of Christmas Cards he has available at precision Photo Imaging. They are local winter scenes shot by Eureka’s own Peg Toliver. He has them for sale this year with a discount available to any Eureka Business Association member.
