Minutes - November 16, 2006

The November meeting was held at Maple Lawn Homes with 14 in attendance including our featured speaker, Duane Schroeder from State Farm Insurance. The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted for filing as corrected. Treasurer’s balance as of October 31, 2006 is $7,578.77.

Committee Reports:

Christmas with Santa – The event will be held at Curves on December 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Vada Schertz is chairing again this year. She reported that she is preparing the picture list with Eldon. Santa and Mrs. Clause have been booked. There are lots of leftover prizes to use this year. She has ordered more games to use. She still has been unable to reach the owners of the deer.

Economic Development Council - No Report.

City - Jim Meares was present for the city. The West end turn lane project has been held up by weather as has the planting of new trees downtown. Monday night, November 20, the City is hosting a reception for Nancy Scott, who has been awarded the Studs Terkel Humanities Service Award from the Illinois Humanities Council for her commitment to promoting the Humanities in the Eureka area. The reception will be from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. with the award presentation at 6:00.

Old Business – Heidi Bowman reported on the EBA inserts in the Woodford County Journal. There is one business tentatively booked for December. This will fulfill the contract of 12 which expires in April 2007.

Business Spotlight – Duane Schroeder from State Farm Insurance was our monthly spotlight speaker. State Farm was started in 1922 by G.J. Meherle and currently boasts #1 Insurance Company with the fewest complaints. Duane started with State Farm April 1, 1989 and moved to Eureka in 1993. He enjoys helping individuals make the right choices for their life. State Farm now offers financial services also through State Farm Bank. Duane has over 90 products or solutions and is preparing for Internet sales and to respond to the needs of the Baby Boomers. Advertising continues to be a challenge.

Suggestions for New Members to Contact

Brief Business Update – Duane Schroeder initiated some discussion regarding “shopping locally” to keep dollars in town and keep businesses open.

Bryant Ruder suggested newspaper articles i.e. people who moved away and then returned to Eureka to raise kids.
