Minutes - September 18, 2008

 

The September meeting was at the Eureka College Cerf Center with 13 people in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. The August minutes were approved.  There was no treasurer’sreport.

  

Committee Reports:

Buy Local: Larry Whitaker said the group was discussing the website. Jim Fyke said that Aaron Rapp is the Eureka College intern and he will be doing stories on EBA businesses.

 

Eureka Reagan Fest: Jim Fyke said that they were waiting on final numbers and mentioned that next year Reagan Fest will be part of the Sesquicentennial.

 

Taste of Eureka: Heidi Bowman said the Taste was a success, with over 400 tickets sold. Nancy Scott thanked Heidi for her work.

 

Holiday Promotions 2008:  Cynthia Baer said plans for “Holiday Homecoming” this year include a storefront display contest and a Holiday Stroll of businesses. Photos with Santa will be Saturday, December 13, along with a children’s art show and carnival games sponsored by businesses.  Discussion ensued about possible locations and the possibility of community caroling.

 

City: Jim Meares passed out a report. He encouraged people who support the pool to attend meetings, as the City is hearing mostly from people who oppose the project.

 

Sesquicentennial Update: Laura Siscoe said two printings of the cookbooks had sold out and a third shipment is coming. The next meeting is September 23 at 7 p.m. in the County Board room, and all are welcome.  There was no report on the summer band concerts. 

 

Old Business:

 EBA Gift Certificates: Nancy Scott said the gift check program was going well, with $1090 sold at this point. She mentioned it is a great gift idea. 60 EBA businesses are participating. Larry Whitaker said he planned to approach big Eureka employers to encourage them to support the gift check program. He thanked Nancy for her effort. There was some discussion about the dues being raised for next year. Several people mentioned new EBA membership benefits, such as the gift check program, the intern, and the member directory.

 

New Business: 

Circus:  Nancy Aldridge of Kiwanis said the group is sponsoring the Kelly Miller circus, which is coming to town on October 3. She mentioned that if businesses bought tickets beforehand, the Kiwanis will donate them to organizations such as ADDWC and Head Start. She said they would appreciate businesses’ support.

 

Brief Business Update:  

Lois Ferrero said Peg Toliver will be offering early morning Yoga classes at Healthy Arts Physical Therapy. Nancy Scott mentioned the library-sponsored “Lincoln Legacy” program will be held September 30 at 7 pm in Memorial Hall at Maple Lawn.
