The Eureka police department has added some great new technology called the Bola Wrap. The Bola Wrap is a hand-held remote restraint device that discharges a Kevlar tether, eight feet in length, that is designed to entangle a subject at a range of 10-25 feet. This allows officers to temporarily restrain a subject at a safe distance and can potentially reduce a subject’s ability to struggle, minimizing the possibility of needing to use higher levels of force. The device allows for a less injurious level of force in certain situations, compared to electronic control devices like the Taser. It does not incapacitate subjects like our other use of force options such as chemical agents, Tasers, or impact weapons.
This is a relatively new piece of equipment, currently in use in only a handful of police agencies in the State of Illinois. It is the Eureka police department's policy that officers hold the highest regard for the dignity and liberty of all persons, and we place minimal reliance upon the use of force. The application of deadly force is a measure to be employed in only the most extreme circumstances. Because of this, we continue to research technology like this to ensure this and to make sure that officers are properly equipped to perform their job tasks at a high level.
Eureka police officers carry TASER 7. If you want to learn more about the TASER 7 just visit this link: https://www.axon.com/products/taser-7
